Please arrive before 8:45am to register and get your bowls

If something happens the morning of the event that prevents you from attending, please call or email. It is a significant inconvenience to the tournament organizers if you fail to show up.
Recommended time to arrive is 8:45am at the latest. Go to the registration desk and register and pick your game cards for the first three games (random draw). Be there rain or shine. The Conditions of Play will be reviewed prior to the first game.
Coffee/Tea and snacks, as well as lunch will be provided, at no charge. There is no entry fee for Novice Championships.
Everyone will play three games before the lunch break. After those three games, the results will be tabulated and the top EIGHT finishers in both the Men’s and the Women’s groups (based on points and differential) will progress to the quarter-final semi-final knockout round. For the rest of you, your bowling is finished for the day. Please stay for lunch and stay for the afternoon session to cheer on your fellow novice bowlers!
Dress Code:
We ask bowlers to wear a collared shirt when playing in our club tournaments. You do not have to wear white. To protect the greens, please wear flat-soled, comfortable shoes with no heels or treads.
Schedule:
2-bowl Trial ends start at 9:20 am followed by Games 1, 2 and 3 (all games are first to 15 points or 45 minutes)
Lunch approx 12:15pm
Quarter Finals approx. 12:50
Semi Finals approx 1:45pm
Finals approx 2:35pm
Presentations to follow
Note: TRIAL ENDS are an opportunity to roll four practice bowls (2 in each direction, ideally one backhand and one forehand each way). This gives you the opportunity to get a feel for the speed of the greens and to get a sense of how much or how little your bowls are going to curl on that rink.

Conditions of Play (SPLBC)
-
All games are first to 15 points or 45 minutes, whichever comes first. A bell will ring to start each game
-
No jack can be delivered after the ringing of the 45 minute bell, but you can finish the end you are playing
-
Jacks knocked out of bounds are re-spotted on the 2 metre tee
-
3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 points for a loss
-
Differential is limited to a maximum of 10 (differential is the difference between your final score and your opponent’s final score). It does NOT mean the game is over once one player has a differential of 10 during the game – you need to keep playing until the end of the game (see 1 above).
-
A bye is a win and +5 differential
-
No visiting the head until after you deliver your 3rd bowl.
-
Your marker is the official scorekeeper and will keep the scoreboard up to date (you can keep score on your own card too). After each game, the two players must agree on the score before initialling the marker’s official card. to the tournament scorekeeper.
-
After 3 games, the top 8 finishers will be positioned from 1 to 8 based on points and differential and (if needed) Strength of Opposition*. Bowlers must abide by the decision of the convenor.
-
The Top 8 proceed to the Quarter-finals: #1 plays #8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 in both the women’s and men’s groups.
-
The winners advance to the semi-finals and winners of the semi-finals compete in the final. There is no 3rd place game
-
If a knock-out game ends in a tie, an extra end will be played to determine the winner.
-
FOOTWEAR & DRESS CODE: Players should wear collared shirts (see page 16 of the V&D Handbook).

-
CANCELLATIONS: The Convenor or Director of Bowling (if present) has the authority to suspend, reschedule or cancel play if adverse weather conditions are an issue.  In the event of cancellation before the game has started, entry fees will be refunded. SPLBC reserve the right to deduct club expenses in the event of cancellation. If only one game has been completed before the cancellation, entry fee money will be donated to a local charity, after club expenses have been deducted. If two or more games have been played before cancellation, prize money will be distributed based on the results of the played games.
*Strength of opposition (SOO) is a way to break a tie in the final standings when points and differential are equal between two or more teams. Simply put, the team that had the toughest draw (based on the final standings of the teams you have played) will win the tie breaker. Our electronic scoreboard makes this easy to determine. SOO is established by adding up the final placement standings of your four opponents and the lower the total, the stronger the opposition. For example, TEAM 'A' and TEAM 'B' finished with identical points and differential. However, TEAM 'A' played against teams that finished 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th in the final standings, so their 'SOO' would add up to  ‘26’. TEAM 'B' played against teams that ended up in 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd place (their SOO would add up to ‘86’) so TEAM 'A' clearly had a tougher draw and therefore win the tie breaker decision. Remember, the lower SOO number wins the tiebreaker. If our electronic scoreboard is not in use, prize money will be shared between the teams involved.
