Conditions of Play (SPLBC)
-
FORMAT: 3-bowl pairs. Time limit is 65 minutes for sectional games and 70 minutes for knockout games. A bell will start and end each game.
-
TRIAL ENDS: Before first game only. Two-up, two-back trial ends at approximately 8:45 AM. Not included in game time limit.
-
**NEW** Conclusion of the match (time): after conclusion of match time (65 or 70 minutes), a bell will ring. When the bell rings, any end already in progress must be completed and will constitute the final end of the game. If an end has just concluded and any player has picked up the jack before the bell rings, one final end must be played.
-
HEAD VISITS: Skips can visit the head once per end, after delivery of their second bowl. Leads may not visit the head.

-
JACK OUT OF BOUNDS: Re-spot the jack on the 2-metre ‘T’.

-
SCORING: Teams will get 3 game points for a win, 1 game point for a tie and 0 game points for a loss.  Shot differentials are capped at +10 or -10 per game.

-
SCORE CARDS: At the completion of each game, skips to sign both score cards and the winning skip will deliver both signed cards to the scorekeeper.

-
LATE ARRIVAL: If one or both team members are more than 10 minutes late (after the starting bell) they will forfeit the game and the ‘Bye’ criteria (below) will be applied.
-
BYE. If a bye is unavoidable, the team receiving the bye will be awarded 3 points and a shot differential that is the average of all other winning teams in that same round.
-
SPARES: Any spares must be pre-approved by the convener

-
STANDINGS: After the three morning games, the top eight teams (or four if < 16 teams) in the standings will progress to the knockout rounds. The following criteria will be used to break ties in the standings: (a) game points won; (b) shot differential +/- record; (c) strength of opposition (SOO) based on electronic rankings*.
However, if more than eight (four if < 16 teams) teams win all three games, the lower-ranked undefeated teams will play a 4-end knockout mini-game to determine which team(s) advance to the semi-finals.
-
KNOCKOUT BRACKETS: The first knockout game will pit the highest ranked teams against the lowest ranked teams (e.g., 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3, or 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, etc)
-
KNOCKOUT RULES: All knockout rounds are single-knockout: once a team loses, they do not play any additional games (i.e., there is no third-place game). If it becomes impossible for one team to win or tie a game (based on score and ends remaining), the game is concluded and players must not play the remaining ends. Knockout games cannot end in a tie. If tied after all ends have been completed, or after the sound of the bell, an extra end will be played. A new coin toss will be required to determine control of the mat for the extra end (whether engendered by the bell or the conclusion of 10 ends).
-
UMPIRE: No umpire will be available.  An Umpire kit is available for all to use if needed. If undecided, asked someone in an adjacent rink to help decide. His/her decision is final.

-
FOOTWEAR & DRESS CODE: Team members should wear collared shirts of the same colour (see page 16 of the V&D Handbook) and footwear that will not damage the green.

-
CELL PHONES: As a courtesy please turn off cell phones or put on vibrate mode. Do not hold telephone conversations during the game.

-
PRIZES:  Will be paid at Awards Day in September. Approx 10% of entry fees will be retained to cover hospitality costs
-
INCLEMENT WEATHER: All players must be ready to play regardless of the weather. See ‘Cancellations’ below.
-
CANCELLATIONS: The Convener, Games Leader, or Director of Bowling (if present) has the authority to suspend, reschedule or cancel play if adverse weather conditions are an issue.  In the event of cancellation before the game has started, entry fees will be refunded. SPLBC reserve the right to deduct club expenses in the event of cancellation. If only one game has been completed before the cancellation, entry fee money will be donated to a local charity, after club expenses have been deducted. If two or more games have been played before cancellation, prize money will be distributed based on the results of the played games.
*Strength of opposition (SOO) is a way to break a tie in the final standings when points and differential are equal between two or more teams. Simply put, the team that had the toughest draw (based on the final standings of the teams you have played) will win the tie breaker. Our electronic scoreboard makes this easy to determine. SOO is established by adding up the final placement standings of your four opponents and the lower the total, the stronger the opposition. For example, TEAM 'A' and TEAM 'B' finished with identical points and differential. However, TEAM 'A' played against teams that finished 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th in the final standings, so their 'SOO' would add up to  ‘26’. TEAM 'B' played against teams that ended up in 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd place (their SOO would add up to ‘86’) so TEAM 'A' clearly had a tougher draw and therefore win the tie breaker decision. Remember, the lower SOO number wins the tiebreaker. If our electronic scoreboard is not in use, prize money will be shared between the teams involved.
