KRIS WALLACE WINS WOMEN'S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

On Saturday, 22 women competed in the 2024 edition of the Stanley Park Women’s Singles Championship.

Following the three morning games, three bowlers—Kris Wallace, Maggie Fee and Cheryl Young—had won all three of their games to lead the pack on 9 points. Also unbeaten was Toni Ludski, with two wins and a tie for a total of 7 points.

Just behind the leading four were a pack of seven bowlers with two wins apiece on 6 points: Jenny Wong, Sharyn Collis, Tanja McQueen, Judy McInerney, Monika Hilson, Gay Hawley and Gabrielle Ladouceur. When the differential was calculated, it was Tanja, Gay, Judy and Monika who edged out Jenny, Sharyn and Gabrielle to make it through to the Quarter-Final knock-out stage.

Two of the four quarter-final games were rematches from the morning games, with Tanja defeating an ailing but stoic Toni, and Cheryl narrowly edging out Gay thanks to a two in the last end. Kris and Maggie continued their winning ways by beating Judy and Monika respectively.

In the hot afternoon sunshine, the semi-final between Tanja and Maggie was an epic back and forth battle that delighted the throng of spectators, with Maggie hanging on to win 9-8. In the other semi, Kris continued her steady play with a victory over Cheryl to advance to the final.

In the final, Kris got off to a strong start, building a big lead over Maggie, a two-time winner of this event. But Maggie started to claw her way back into the game to make things very interesting. But Kris withheld the late challenge to become the Women’s Singles Champion for the first time.

In the third place game, Tanja defeated Cheryl.

Sincere appreciation to the volunteers that made this such a wonderful event. From the kitchen helpers, the scorekeepers, the set-up crew, the bar staff and the many markers who gave up their time to contribute, thank you all!
