2020 Men’s Singles Championship
The 2020 Men’s Singles Championship, held on Saturday, Sept 5th had sixteen of the club’s male bowlers battling it out in the competition. Each bowler played three round-robin games within their group and with only the winner of each of the four groups moving into the final four, there was little room for error.
Two of the four groups saw head-to-head confrontations in the third and final game to establish the group winners. Rob Berridge pulled off a late comeback to defeat Gavin Clifford by a single point, while Claus Braovac withstood a late charge from Trevor Ludski to progress. The two other group winners were Terry Furlong, who won his group with relative ease, and Albert Nieuwold, who had to recover from a six-point deficit in his third game to qualify.
In the first semi-final, Rob Berridge started to hit his stride and was just too strong for Terry Furlong, winning the game 17-10. In the other semi-final, Claus Braovac faced Albert Nieuwold in a tense encounter. After Albert scored a two in the 9th end to go-ahead 8-6, Claus took control of the game with some exceptional bowling, winning the last six ends to secure an 18-8 victory and earn his place in the final. In the third-place game Albert Nieuwold finally found the form that had eluded him in his earlier games, defeating Terry Furlong by winning 9 of the last 10 ends for a comfortable 21-8 victory.
The Championship Final between Rob Berridge and Claus Braovac lacked the drama that the Women’s Singles and Gender Neutral Pairs finals had produced as Rob was in complete control from start to finish. Despite a valiant effort from Claus, Rob always seemed to produce a key shot at just the right time, winning 21-10 to become the 2020 Men’s Singles Champion.

Results From the Wednesday Competitive Pairs League
This league contained a full contingent of 14 teams. Due to the shortened season we were only able to play 6 games. However, we had an enjoyable experience. The money prizes (from registration fees) went to the top 4 teams below:
FIRST PLACE - Bruce Hoadley and Barbara Lewis. This team was undefeated in their 6 games. Bruce came through with a clutch shot with his last bowl in their last game to come away with the win.
SECOND PLACE - Gilbert and Margaret Chinn. Going into their final game this team was by far the leader - undefeated with a huge differential. However, they lost their last game by 1 point putting them into second position.
THIRD PLACE - Garry Brazzill and John Kruzick
FOURTH PLACE - Gavin Clifford and Dirk Ricker
We would like to thank the SPLBC committee that came up with the procedures for safe bowling, the reservation system, maintaining the greens and, of course, the monitors. A great job by all.
2020 Gender Neutral Pairs Championship
After a week of dry conditions and with freshly cut grass to play on, the sixteen pairs that competed in this years 2020 Gender Neutral Pairs Championship experienced fast greens to test their skills.
The format is now familiar to all. Each pair played three round-robin games within their group, with only the winner of each group moving into the final four. The draw provided some intriguing matchups and, just like the previous week in the Women’s Singles, there were a number of eye-catching results.
After the epic battles of the group games had concluded, the four group winners were declared. Albert Nieuwold and Chris Chapman; Rob Berridge and Terry Furlong; Trevor and Toni Ludski; and Lisa Blake and Janis Ballantyne.
In the first semi-final, Albert and Chris cruised to victory over Lisa and Janis, while the other semi saw Rob and Terry (aka ‘Orange Thunder’) come to a ‘crushing’ 14-6 defeat to Trevor and Toni, the Ludski’s killing the game off with a four in the 8th end.
In the third-place game Rob and Terry established an 8-0 lead after just 4 ends. Lisa and Janis fought back but came up a little short as Rob and Terry held on to win 12-9 and claim the bronze envelope.
The many spectators that stayed to watch the Championship Final were treated to an exhibition of top-class bowling, as Albert and Chris battled it out with Trevor and Toni. The teams shared 2s for the first four ends and after eight (of 10) ends the game was delicately poised at 8-6 for Albert and Chris.
In the 9th end, Trevor and Toni were holding two to really put the pressure on the leaders when Albert delivered a spectacular shot that took the jack to two waiting back bowls, escorted by his own bowl. The three points gained in that end essentially killed any hope of a comeback for Trevor and Toni. The score ended 11-7, with Albert and Chris declared the 2020 Champions.
2020 Women’s Singles Championship
The 2020 Women’s Singles Championship was played under sunny skies on Saturday and was a great success. Sixteen bowlers signed up to test their mettle in competition including a few bowlers that were experiencing a tournament setting for the first time.
The format, which will also be used in the upcoming Men’s Singles and the Gender Neutral Pairs, was to divide teams into four groups of four. Each bowler played three round-robin games within their group, with only the winner of each group moving into the final four.
The group games provided a lot of surprise results, as newer, less experienced bowlers provided a number of upsets against their more experienced opponents.
When the dust settled the four group winners were Linda Gorman, Petra Vanderley, Janis Ballantyne and Judy Lawson.
In the semi-finals, Judy Lawson defeated Janis Ballantyne 18-10 and Linda Gorman and Petra Vanderley battled it out in an exciting game that went right to the bell, with Linda winning by a single point 11-10.
The third-place game between Petra and Janis resulted in a 21-8 victory for Petra.
The Championship Final between Linda Gorman and Judy Lawson was another tense battle. Linda started out strongly, going into a 9-3 lead after seven ends. Judy started to come back and tied it up at 10-10 before giving up a three. But she bounced back to win the next three ends, eventually winning 18-14 to become the 2020 Women’s Singles Champion.
It was a tournament full of surprise results, great camaraderie and some wonderful performances.
Thank you to all the markers (Rob, Terry, Scott, Claus, Rosemary, Dave, Dirk, Chris, Geordie, Marianne, Neil, Jim and Judith) for stepping up and helping out.
And a special thanks to Terry Furlong, Tom Gorman, Chris Chapman and John Gerhard and to all those who stayed and helped out throughout the long day.
